Transliteration: Bismillah.
Translation: In the name of Allah.
Source: Sahih Muslim 2018
When to recite
When entering your home, followed by greeting those inside with salam.
Virtue
The Prophet ﷺ said that when a man enters his house and mentions Allah on entering and when eating, Shaytan says to his companions: “You have no place to stay and no dinner here.”
About this dua
Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah. The Sunnah on entering the home is to remember Allah by name; the Quran also instructs believers to greet one another with salam when entering houses (Quran 24:61).
Notes
A longer wording often quoted for entering the home (“Bismillahi walajna wa bismillahi kharajna…”) is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud 5096, but al-Albani and others graded its chain weak, so the authentic Bismillah of Sahih Muslim is given here.
