اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Transliteration: Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatik.

Translation: O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.

When to recite

When entering the masjid, stepping in with the right foot; and the second dua when leaving, stepping out with the left foot. This is the Sunnah in a hadith of Anas, graded hasan by al-Albani (as-Silsilah as-Sahihah 2478).

About this dua

Narrated by Abu Humayd or Abu Usayd: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that when one of you enters the mosque he should say this, and when he leaves he should say “Allahumma inni as’aluka min fadlik”. Scholars note the beautiful pairing: on entering a place of worship one asks for mercy, and on leaving to return to work and daily life one asks for Allah’s bounty and provision.
