When to recite
In times of difficulty, distress or after a mistake, and whenever you ask Allah for something.
Virtue
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The supplication of Dhun-Nun (Yunus) when he called upon Allah in the belly of the whale … no Muslim ever supplicates with it for anything except that Allah responds to him.” (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3505)
About this dua
Prophet Yunus called out with these words from the darkness of the whale’s belly, the night and the sea. It combines declaring Allah’s oneness, glorifying Him and admitting one’s own fault, and Allah says in the next verse: “Then We heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish. Thus we save believers.” (21:88)
