Hijri Date Converter
Convert dates between the Gregorian and Islamic (Hijri) calendars in either direction. The converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar and works entirely in your browser.
Conversions use the Umm al-Qura calendar (official tables for 1400–1500 AH). The Hijri date shown for a Gregorian day is the date during daylight hours; after sunset the Islamic date moves on by one day. Countries that rely on local moon sighting may be one day behind or ahead.

How Hijri to Gregorian conversion works
The Gregorian calendar is solar, with 365 or 366 days a year. The Hijri calendar is lunar: each month starts with the new crescent moon and has 29 or 30 days, giving a year of 354 or 355 days. Because the two calendars drift apart by about 11 days a year, there is no fixed offset between them; converting a date requires knowing the exact length of every Hijri month in between.
This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calculated calendar of Saudi Arabia. Its months are fixed in advance using astronomical criteria for Makkah, so it can convert any date, past or future, consistently. For 1400–1500 AH (1979–2077) the converter uses the published table of Umm al-Qura month lengths, so results match official Saudi dates.
Keep in mind two things when using a converted date:
- Sunset rule: the Islamic day starts at sunset. A Gregorian day therefore overlaps two Hijri dates: the one shown for its daylight hours, and the next one after Maghrib.
- Moon sighting: where a month begins with an actual sighting of the crescent, the local date may be one day later than the calculated date, and occasionally one day earlier.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Gregorian date to Hijri?
Choose the date in the "Gregorian to Hijri" box and press Convert. The result shows the Hijri day, month and year in English and Arabic, and the date that begins after sunset.
How do I convert a Hijri date to Gregorian?
Select the Hijri day and month, enter the Hijri year (for example 1448), and press Convert. If the month has only 29 days and you chose the 30th, the converter tells you.
Is there a formula to convert Hijri years to Gregorian years?
An approximate formula is: Gregorian year ≈ Hijri year × 0.970229 + 621.5643, or Hijri year ≈ (Gregorian year − 621.5643) × 1.030684. It only gives the year; exact day conversion needs a calendar table such as Umm al-Qura.
Why might a converted date be one day off?
Calendars such as Umm al-Qura are calculated in advance, while many communities start each month with an actual moon sighting. The result can therefore differ by a day from the date used where you live.
What range of dates does the converter support?
Hijri years 1356 to 1600 (roughly 1937 to 2174 CE). For 1400–1500 AH it uses the published Umm al-Qura month lengths; outside that range it relies on your browser's built-in Umm al-Qura calendar.
