How to read and write the Hijri date
A Hijri date is written as day, month and year, followed by AH (Anno Hegirae, "year of the Hijrah"). For example, 30 Rabi al-Thani 1448 AH. In Arabic the same date is written ٣٠ رَبِيع الآخِر ١٤٤٨ هـ, where هـ stands for hijri. In numeric form it is often written 30/4/1448 AH.
The twelve months are Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qadah and Dhul Hijjah. Each has 29 or 30 days, and the year has 354 or 355 days. See all months with their Arabic names and meanings on the Islamic calendar page.
Why your local Hijri date may differ
Islamic months begin with the new crescent moon. The Umm al-Qura calendar used on this page calculates the start of each month in advance for Makkah. Many communities instead wait for the crescent to be seen with the eye, either in their own country or anywhere in the world, following the hadith "fast when you see it and break your fast when you see it" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1909; Sahih Muslim 1081).
The crescent is not always visible on the evening the calculation predicts, especially further east, so a month that begins with local sighting often starts one day later. That is why, for instance, Eid can be celebrated on different days in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and the United Kingdom. Both approaches are followed in good faith by scholars and communities around the world.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Islamic date today?
The box at the top of this page shows today's Hijri date for your device's local date, using the Umm al-Qura calendar. If your community begins months with local moon sighting, your date may be one day behind (occasionally ahead).
Does the Hijri date change at midnight?
No. In Islamic tradition the day begins at sunset, so the Hijri date moves on at Maghrib. Calendars and this page show the date that applies during the daytime; after sunset, the next Hijri date has already begun.
What does AH mean?
AH stands for Anno Hegirae, Latin for "in the year of the Hijrah". It marks years counted from the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. In Arabic the abbreviation هـ is used.
Why is the Hijri date different in Pakistan, India or the UK?
Many communities in these countries start each month only after the new crescent is sighted locally or regionally. The crescent is often seen a day later than the date calculated for Saudi Arabia, so the local Hijri date can be one day behind the Umm al-Qura date.
Which calendar does this page use?
The Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calculated Hijri calendar of Saudi Arabia, using the published month lengths for 1400–1500 AH.
