Qibla Direction Finder
Find the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah from wherever you are. Tap "Use my current location", pick one of 63 major cities, or type your coordinates. The finder shows the Qibla as a bearing in degrees from true north, the distance to the Kaaba, and, on phones with a compass, a live dial that turns as you move.

Enter coordinates manually
Use decimal degrees: south latitudes and west longitudes are negative.
Example: London, United Kingdom
119.0° from true north
Face east-southeast
Distance to the Kaaba: 4,794 km (2,979 miles)
Your phone compass is lined up with the Qibla
Your heading: –°
Phone compasses point to magnetic north, so this can be a few degrees off where you live. Check it against the bearing shown above.
Your location is used only inside your browser to calculate the direction. It is never sent to our servers.
How to use the Qibla finder
- Set your location. Allow location access, choose the nearest city, or enter latitude and longitude (you can copy them from any map app).
- Read the bearing. The large number is the Qibla direction in degrees, measured clockwise from true north. For example, 90° is due east and 135° is southeast.
- Turn to face it. On a phone, tap "Enable live compass", hold the phone flat and turn until the black Kaaba marker sits under the arrow at the top of the dial. Without a live compass, use a separate compass and the degree value.
- Double-check. If possible, compare with the direction used by a local mosque, especially indoors or near metal.
Facing the Qibla in prayer
Facing the Qibla is one of the conditions of the obligatory prayer. Early in the Madinan period Muslims prayed towards Jerusalem, and then the Qibla was changed to the Sacred Mosque in Makkah, as described in Surah al-Baqarah.
We have seen the turning of thy face to heaven (for guidance, O Muhammad). And now verily We shall make thee turn (in prayer) toward a qiblah which is dear to thee. So turn thy face toward the Inviolable Place of Worship, and ye (O Muslims), wheresoever ye may be, turn your faces (when ye pray) toward it. Lo! Those who have received the Scripture know that (this revelation) is the Truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do.
When you cannot see the Kaaba, you make a reasonable effort to determine its direction. Most scholars hold that facing its general direction is enough for someone far away, so small differences of a few degrees are not a cause for worry.
How the Qibla direction is calculated
The Earth is a sphere (very nearly), and the shortest route between two points on a sphere is an arc of agreat circle. The Qibla direction is the compass bearing at which that shortest route leaves your location towards the Kaaba, located at about 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E.
For a place at latitude φ₁ and longitude λ₁, with the Kaaba at φ₂, λ₂, the initial bearing θ is:
θ = atan2( sin Δλ · cos φ₂ , cos φ₁ · sin φ₂ − sin φ₁ · cos φ₂ · cos Δλ ), where Δλ = λ₂ − λ₁
The result is converted to degrees and normalised to 0–360°. The distance shown uses the haversine formula with a mean Earth radius of 6,371 km. These are the same calculations used by most modern Qibla apps.
A great-circle route can look surprising on a flat map. From New York, United States the Qibla is about 58° (east-northeast), from London, United Kingdom about 119° (east-southeast), from Karachi, Pakistan about 268° (west), and from Jakarta, Indonesia about 295° (west-northwest). Historically, some communities in North America faced southeast, following a straight line on a Mercator map (a "rhumb line"); today nearly all mosques and Islamic organisations use the great-circle direction.

Other ways to find the Qibla
- Ask the local mosque. The prayer hall's direction has usually been checked carefully, and local Muslims can tell you which way to face.
- Use the sun's position over the Kaaba. Around 27–28 May (about 12:18 Makkah time) and 15–16 July (about 12:27 Makkah time) the sun is almost directly overhead the Kaaba. Wherever the sun is visible at that moment, the shadow of a vertical stick points directly away from the Qibla.
- Use a map. Online maps that draw a geodesic (great-circle) line from your home to Makkah show the same direction as this tool.
Once you know which way to face, check today's prayer times for your city, keep count of your dhikr with the tasbih counter, or see all our Islamic tools.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Qibla?
The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in the Sacred Mosque (al-Masjid al-Haram) in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Muslims face it in the five daily prayers, as commanded in the Quran (2:144). The word comes from an Arabic root meaning "to face".
How accurate is this Qibla finder?
The bearing is calculated mathematically from your coordinates to the Kaaba, so the number itself is very precise. In practice, accuracy depends on how you turn to that direction: phone compasses can be off by several degrees because of magnetic interference, and magnetic north differs from true north. Scholars generally agree that facing the general direction (jihah) of the Kaaba is sufficient for someone who cannot see it.
Why is the Qibla northeast from America and not southeast?
The shortest path on a globe is a great circle, not a straight line on a flat map. From New York the great-circle route to Makkah starts out heading east-northeast (about 58°) and curves across the Atlantic. Flat maps such as the Mercator projection distort this, which is why a line drawn on a wall map points southeast. Most Islamic organisations in North America use the great-circle direction.
What is the Qibla direction in degrees from London?
From central London the Qibla is about 119.0° from true north, which is east-southeast. The Kaaba is roughly 4,794 km away along the great circle.
Do I need to repeat my prayer if I faced the wrong direction?
This is a question of fiqh with some differences of opinion. Many scholars hold that if someone made a genuine effort to find the Qibla and later learned they were mistaken, the prayer is valid, while if the mistake is discovered during the prayer they should turn to the correct direction and continue. Ask a local scholar about your specific situation.
Why does my phone compass give a different direction?
Phone compasses measure magnetic north, which can differ from true north by a few degrees or more depending on where you live (magnetic declination). Metal objects, cases with magnets, cars and electrical appliances can also disturb the reading. Calibrate your compass by moving the phone in a figure-eight, and check the result against a landmark or a nearby mosque.
