About Surah Al-Ghashiyah
Al-Ghashiyah, "The Overwhelming", contrasts faces that will be humbled and exhausted on the Day of Judgment with faces that will be joyful in a lofty garden. It invites reflection on the camel, the sky, the mountains and the earth, and reminds the Prophet ﷺ that his role is to remind.
In the hadith
- The Prophet ﷺ used to recite Al-A‘la and Al-Ghashiyah in the two Eid prayers and in the Friday prayer. (Sahih Muslim 878)

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Hal ataaka hadeesul ghaashiyah
Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming?
Wujoohuny yawma 'izin khaashi'ah
On that day (many) faces will be downcast,
'Aamilatun naasibah
Toiling, weary,
Taslaa naaran haamiyah
Scorched by burning fire,
Tusqaa min 'aynin aaniyah
Drinking from a boiling spring,
Laisa lahum ta'aamun illaa min daree'
No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit
Laa yusminu wa laa yughnee min joo'
Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.
Wujoohuny yawma 'izin naa'imah
In that day other faces will be calm,
Lisa'yihaa raadiyah
Glad for their effort past,
Fee jannatin 'aaliyah
In a high Garden
Laa tasma'u feehaa laaghiyah
Where they hear no idle speech,
Feehaa 'aynun jaariyah
Wherein is a gushing spring,
Feehaa sururum marfoo'ah
Wherein are couches raised
Wa akwaabum mawdoo 'ah
And goblets set at hand
Wa namaariqu masfoofah
And cushions ranged
Wa zaraabiyyu mabsoosah
And silken carpets spread.
Afalaa yanzuroona ilalibili kaifa khuliqat
Will they not regard the camels, how they are created?
Wa ilas samaaa'i kaifa rufi'at
And the heaven, how it is raised?
Wa ilal jibaali kaifa nusibat
And the hills, how they are set up?
Wa ilal ardi kaifa sutihat
And the earth, how it is spread?
Fazakkir innama anta Muzakkir
Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer,
Lasta 'alaihim bimusaitir
Thou art not at all a warder over them.
Illaa man tawallaa wa kafar
But whoso is averse and disbelieveth,
Fa yu'azzibuhul laahul 'azaabal akbar
Allah will punish him with direst punishment.
Innaa ilainaaa iyaabahum
Lo! unto Us is their return
Summa inna 'alainaa hisaabahum
And Ours their reckoning.
