105. Surah Al-Fil – The Elephant

Al-Fil, "The Elephant", recalls how Allah dealt with "the companions of the elephant" — the army, led by an elephant, that marched on Makkah to destroy the Ka‘bah. Allah sent birds in flocks that struck them with stones of baked clay, leaving them like eaten straw. Muslim historians place this event in the year the Prophet ﷺ was born, known as the Year of the Elephant.

106. Surah Quraysh – Quraysh

Quraysh, named after the Prophet’s tribe, reminds the Quraysh of the security that allowed their trade caravans to travel in winter and summer, and calls them to worship the Lord of the Ka‘bah, "who has fed them against hunger and made them safe from fear". It is closely linked in theme with Al-Fil, which comes just before it.

How to memorise the last 10 surahs

  1. Start from the end. Begin with An-Nas, Al-Falaq and Al-Ikhlas, which are the most frequently recited, and work backwards to Al-Fil.
  2. Listen first. Play each verse several times with the ▶ button and repeat after the reciter before trying it from memory.
  3. Use the transliteration as a bridge. It helps at the start, but switch it off with the toggle above as soon as you can follow the Arabic.
  4. Understand what you recite. Read the translation of each verse; knowing the meaning makes the words easier to remember and more meaningful in prayer.
  5. Recite in your prayers. After Al-Fatihah, recite a different surah from this list in each rak‘ah. Daily use is the best revision.
  6. Check with someone. Ask a family member, friend or teacher to listen and correct your pronunciation.

Once you know these ten, a natural next step is the rest of Juz ‘Amma, starting with An-Naba (78), orAyat al-Kursi and Surah Al-Mulk.

Frequently asked questions

What are the last 10 surahs of the Quran?

They are surahs 105 to 114: Al-Fil, Quraysh, Al-Ma'un, Al-Kawthar, Al-Kafirun, An-Nasr, Al-Masad, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas. Together they have 48 verses.

Why do people memorise the last 10 surahs first?

They are short, easy to learn and cover core themes of belief, gratitude, sincerity and seeking refuge in Allah. Because any portion of the Quran can be recited after Al-Fatihah in prayer, they give learners a set of surahs to rotate through in their daily prayers.

Which is the shortest surah in the Quran?

Al-Kawthar (108) is the shortest surah, with three short verses. Al-‘Asr (103) and An-Nasr (110) also have three verses each but are longer in words.

Which of these surahs did the Prophet ﷺ recite before sleeping?

He would recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas into his cupped hands and then wipe over as much of his body as he could, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari 5017.

Are the last 10 surahs the same as Juz ‘Amma?

No. Juz ‘Amma is the whole 30th part of the Quran, from Surah An-Naba (78) to An-Nas (114) — 37 surahs. The last 10 surahs are the final ten of that part.
