About Surah Al-Ma'un

Al-Ma‘un, "Small Kindnesses", describes the one who denies the Judgment: he drives away the orphan and does not encourage feeding the poor. It then warns those who are heedless of their prayers, who pray to be seen, and who withhold even small acts of help (al-ma‘un) from others.

Surah Al-Ma'un is one of the last 10 surahs of the Quran, which many Muslims memorise first and recite in daily prayers.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

  1. أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يُكَذِّبُ بِٱلدِّينِ ﴿١﴾

Ara-aital lazee yu kazzibu bid deen

Hast thou observed him who belieth religion?

  2. فَذَٰلِكَ ٱلَّذِى يَدُعُّ ٱلْيَتِيمَ ﴿٢﴾

    Fa zaalikal lazi yadu'ul-yateem

That is he who repelleth the orphan,

  3. وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ ﴿٣﴾

Wa la ya huddu 'alaa ta'amil miskeen

And urgeth not the feeding of the needy.

  4. فَوَيْلٌۭ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ ﴿٤﴾

    Fa wai lul-lil mu salleen

    Ah, woe unto worshippers

  5. ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ ﴿٥﴾

Al lazeena hum 'an salaatihim sahoon

    Who are heedless of their prayer;

  6. ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَآءُونَ ﴿٦﴾

    Al lazeena hum yuraa-oon

Who would be seen (at worship)

  7. وَيَمْنَعُونَ ٱلْمَاعُونَ ﴿٧﴾

    Wa yamna'oonal ma'oon

    Yet refuse small kindnesses!

Arabic text: Uthmani script (Tanzil). English translation: Marmaduke Pickthall (1930, public domain). Transliteration: English transliteration from the Al Quran Cloud API, in a simple English spelling (it writes the Arabic letter dhal as “z”, while the duas on this site write it as “dh”). Audio: Mishary Rashid Alafasy. A translation conveys the meaning of the Quran; it is not the Quran itself.
