About Surah Al-Falaq

Al-Falaq, "The Daybreak", is the first of the two Mu‘awwidhatayn (surahs of seeking refuge). In five verses it teaches the believer to seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak from the evil of what He created, from the darkness of night, from those who blow on knots in sorcery, and from the envier when he envies.

In the hadith

  • The Prophet ﷺ said of Al-Falaq and An-Nas that verses like them had never been seen before. (Sahih Muslim 814)
  • He recited Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas before sleeping, blowing into his hands and wiping over his body. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017)

Surah Al-Falaq is one of the last 10 surahs of the Quran, which many Muslims memorise first and recite in daily prayers.

Arabic text: Uthmani script (Tanzil). English translation: Marmaduke Pickthall (1930, public domain). Transliteration: English transliteration from the Al Quran Cloud API, in a simple English spelling (it writes the Arabic letter dhal as “z”, while the duas on this site write it as “dh”). Audio: Mishary Rashid Alafasy. A translation conveys the meaning of the Quran; it is not the Quran itself.
