About Surah Al-Masad
Al-Masad, "The Palm Fibre" (also called Al-Lahab), concerns Abu Lahab, an uncle of the Prophet ﷺ who opposed him openly, and his wife. It was revealed after the Prophet ﷺ called the Quraysh together at Mount Safa to warn them and Abu Lahab cursed him.
In the hadith
- The occasion of revelation at Mount Safa is narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4971)
Surah Al-Masad is one of the last 10 surahs of the Quran, which many Muslims memorise first and recite in daily prayers.

Transliteration: English transliteration from the Al Quran Cloud API, in a simple English spelling (it writes the Arabic letter dhal as “z”, while the duas on this site write it as “dh”).
