Sehri and Iftar: common questions

When does Sehri end?

Sehri, the pre-dawn meal, must end before Fajr begins at true dawn. The timetables show the start of Fajr, and you can choose to end Sehri 5 or 10 minutes earlier as a precaution, as many mosques and printed calendars do.

What time is Iftar?

The fast is opened at sunset, when the time for Maghrib begins. The Iftar times here are the calculated sunset times for each city, including any daylight saving changes.

Why are the Ramadan dates only "expected"?

Each Islamic month begins with the sighting of the new crescent. These timetables follow the Umm al-Qura calendar, and many countries, including Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, often begin a day later after their own moon sighting. Each city timetable has a "Ramadan started a day later here" option for this.

Why does the timetable list 30 fasts?

Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days. Whether the 30th fast is kept depends on whether the Shawwal moon is sighted on the evening of the 29th, so it is marked in every timetable.
