When is Shab-e-Barat 2027?

Shab-e-Barat 1448 AH is expected on the night beginning at sunset on Friday, 22 January 2027, leading into 15 Shaban (Saturday, 23 January 2027). That is in 103 days (about 14 weeks).

Based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. In countries that begin months with local moon sighting, the date may be one day later. Please confirm with your local mosque.

Shab-e-Barat (Persian and Urdu for "night of salvation" or "night of records") is the name widely used in South Asia for Laylat al-Nisf min Sha'ban, the night of the middle of Sha'ban. It falls on the night between the 14th and 15th of Sha'ban, the eighth month, roughly two weeks before Ramadan.

Many Muslims spend the night in prayer, Quran recitation and seeking forgiveness, and some fast on the 15th. Scholars hold differing views about the status of the night, as explained below.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Where the start of a month depends on local moon sighting, the actual date in your country may be one day later (occasionally one day earlier). Islamic days begin at sunset, so each observance starts on the evening before its Gregorian date.

The month of Sha'ban

Sha'ban itself has a clear virtue. Aishah reported that she never saw the Prophet ﷺ fast more in any month, outside Ramadan, than he did in Sha'ban (Sahih al-Bukhari 1969; Sahih Muslim 1156). Usamah ibn Zayd reported that the Prophet ﷺ called it a month people neglect between Rajab and Ramadan, a month in which deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds, and he loved for his deeds to be raised while he was fasting (Sunan an-Nasa'i 2357).

The night of the middle of Sha'ban

A hadith reports that Allah looks upon His creation on the night of the middle of Sha'ban and forgives all of them except one who associates partners with Him and one who harbours hatred (Sunan Ibn Majah 1390). Some hadith scholars grade this report and similar narrations as acceptable when taken together, while others consider them weak.

On that basis, many scholars, especially in South Asia and the Levant, encourage individual worship and seeking forgiveness on this night. Others hold that no specific worship should be singled out for it. Both groups agree that reconciling with others and avoiding shirk are the key lessons, and that the fasting of Sha'ban is established.

Recommended practices

  • Fast frequently during Sha'ban. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1969; Sahih Muslim 1156)
  • Seek Allah's forgiveness and mend broken relationships, since those who hold grudges are excluded from the forgiveness mentioned in the hadith. (Sunan Ibn Majah 1390 (graded differently by scholars))
  • Prepare for Ramadan by increasing good deeds in Sha'ban. (Sunan an-Nasa'i 2357)

Where scholars differ

Scholars differ on whether the night of mid-Sha'ban has a confirmed special virtue. Some accept the hadith about it as reliable through multiple chains and encourage worship that night; others regard the narrations as weak and discourage specific rituals. Particular customs, such as special prayers with a fixed number of units, fireworks or set menus, are cultural and not established by authentic hadith.

Frequently asked questions

When is Shab-e-Barat?

It is the night between 14 and 15 Shaban. It begins at sunset on the 14th of Shaban; the table above shows the Gregorian evening for each year.

Is Shab-e-Barat in the Quran?

No. The "blessed night" in Quran 44:3 is understood by most commentators to be Laylat al-Qadr in Ramadan, not the night of mid-Shaban.

Should I fast on 15 Shaban?

Fasting is encouraged throughout Shaban. Fasting the 15th is also part of the "white days" (13th, 14th and 15th of each lunar month), on which voluntary fasting is recommended in general (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 761).
