How the Islamic date is decided in Pakistan
In Pakistan a new Hijri month begins only after the crescent moon is sighted. On the evening of the 29th of every month, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee meets, gathers sighting reports from zonal and district committees across the country, and checks them against forecasts from the Pakistan Meteorological Department. If credible witnesses have seen the crescent, the next day is the 1st of the new month. If not, the current month completes 30 days. The Ministry of Religious Affairs then publishes an official notification.
Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar works differently: it is calculated in advance and starts a month when the moon sets after the sun in Makkah on the 29th, whether or not it can be seen. Because Pakistan is east of Makkah, the moon is younger at sunset there and often too faint to see, so Pakistan's months usually begin a day later. That is why Eid and the start of Ramzan in Pakistan often come a day after Saudi Arabia.
The worldwide date and its Arabic form are on the main Hijri date today page. You can convert any date with the Hijri date converter (Umm al-Qura), or see prayer times in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.
Frequently asked questions
Aaj chand ki tarikh kya hai?
Is page ke upar diye gaye box mein aaj ki Islami tareekh Pakistan ke hisaab se di gayi hai. Yeh Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee ke elaan par mabni hai, aur Maghrib ke baad agli tareekh shuru ho jati hai.
Why is the Islamic date in Pakistan different from Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, which is calculated in advance for Makkah. Pakistan starts each month only after the new crescent is actually sighted. Pakistan lies east of Makkah, so on the evening of the 29th the moon there is younger and harder to see, and the month usually begins one day later. In 1448 AH Pakistan has been one day behind Saudi Arabia in most months and two days behind in Rabi us Sani.
Who decides the Islamic date in Pakistan?
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee meets on the evening of the 29th of each Hijri month, collects testimony from zonal committees across the country and uses data from the Pakistan Meteorological Department. If the crescent is seen, the next day is the 1st of the new month; if not, the month completes 30 days. The Ministry of Religious Affairs then issues an official notification.
When will Ramzan 1448 AH start in Pakistan?
On the Umm al-Qura calendar Ramadan 1448 begins on Monday, 8 February 2027. In Pakistan it is expected to begin on Tuesday, 9 February 2027, but the actual date depends on the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s moon sighting on the evening of 29 Shaban. See the Ramadan timetable for Sehri and Iftar times in your city.
Does the Islamic date change at midnight?
No. The Islamic day begins at sunset, so the Hijri date moves on at Maghrib. This page shows the date for the daytime in Pakistan; after Maghrib the next date has already begun.
