Al-Isra wal-Mi'raj refers to the miraculous night journey of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In the Isra, he was taken by night from the Sacred Mosque in Makkah to al-Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem (Quran 17:1). In the Mi'raj, he ascended through the heavens and was shown great signs of his Lord (Quran 53:13–18).
It was during this journey that the five daily prayers were made obligatory (Sahih al-Bukhari 349; Sahih Muslim 162). The event is commonly commemorated on the 27th of Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar, which is a sacred month.

In the Quran
Glorified be He Who carried His servant by night from the Inviolable Place of Worship to the Far distant place of worship the neighbourhood whereof We have blessed, that We might show him of Our tokens! Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer.
And verily he saw him yet another time By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary,
Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord.
What happened on the Night Journey
According to the hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ was carried on al-Buraq to Jerusalem, where he prayed in al-Masjid al-Aqsa, and then ascended through the seven heavens, meeting prophets including Adam, Isa (Jesus), Yahya (John), Yusuf (Joseph), Idris, Harun (Aaron), Musa (Moses) and Ibrahim (Abraham). Fifty daily prayers were first prescribed; at Musa's urging the Prophet repeatedly asked for a reduction until they became five, with the reward of fifty (Sahih al-Bukhari 349; Sahih Muslim 162).
The journey took place in Makkah before the Hijrah, at a time of great hardship for the Prophet, after the deaths of his wife Khadijah and his uncle Abu Talib.
Lessons Muslims draw from it
The Isra and Mi'raj highlights the central place of the five daily prayers, which were given directly during the ascension rather than through the angel on earth. It also underlines the sanctity of al-Masjid al-Aqsa, the first qiblah of the Muslims and the third holiest mosque in Islam.
