When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?

Eid al-Fitr 1448 AH is expected on Tuesday, 9 March 2027 (1 Shawwal 1448). Like every Islamic day, it begins at sunset the evening before. That is in 149 days (about 21 weeks).

Based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. In countries that begin months with local moon sighting, the date may be one day later. Please confirm with your local mosque.

Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the month after Ramadan. It is one of the two Eids of Islam, together with Eid al-Adha, and marks the completion of a month of fasting.

The day begins with a special congregational prayer in the morning. Before it, Muslims pay Zakat al-Fitr, a small charity in food that makes sure poorer families can celebrate too. Fasting on the day of Eid itself is not allowed.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Where the start of a month depends on local moon sighting, the actual date in your country may be one day later (occasionally one day earlier). Islamic days begin at sunset, so each observance starts on the evening before its Gregorian date.

In the Quran

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desireth for you ease; He desireth not hardship for you; and (He desireth) that ye should complete the period, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that peradventure ye may be thankful.
Quran 2:185 (Surah Al-Baqara). Translation: Pickthall.

Meaning of Eid al-Fitr

When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, the people there had two days of festivity. He told them that Allah had replaced those with two better days: the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr (Sunan Abi Dawud 1134). Eid al-Fitr is therefore a day of gratitude for having completed the fast; the Quran links the end of Ramadan to glorifying Allah for His guidance and to giving thanks (Quran 2:185).

Zakat al-Fitr

Zakat al-Fitr (also called fitrana or sadaqat al-fitr) is due on every Muslim who has food beyond their needs for the day of Eid, paid on behalf of themselves and their dependants. The Prophet ﷺ made it one sa' (a measure of about four double handfuls) of dates or barley and ordered that it be given before people go out to the Eid prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503; Sahih Muslim 984). Many scholars allow it to be paid in cash or a few days early; local mosques usually announce a recommended amount.

After Eid: six days of Shawwal

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they fasted for a lifetime (Sahih Muslim 1164). These six days can be fasted at any point in Shawwal after the day of Eid, consecutively or separately.

Recommended practices

  • Give Zakat al-Fitr before the Eid prayer. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503; Sahih Muslim 984)
  • Eat something, ideally an odd number of dates, before going to the Eid prayer. (Sahih al-Bukhari 953)
  • Attend the Eid prayer at the prayer ground, and begin the day with it. (Sahih al-Bukhari 956)
  • Go to the prayer by one route and return by another. (Sahih al-Bukhari 986)
  • Do not fast on the day of Eid. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1990; Sahih Muslim 1137)
  • Fast six days of Shawwal afterwards. (Sahih Muslim 1164)

Where scholars differ

Because Eid al-Fitr depends on the sighting of the Shawwal moon, some countries celebrate a day before or after others. The date here follows the Umm al-Qura calendar.
