Eid al-Adha 2027: Date, Qurbani and Sunnahs
عِيد الأَضْحَى · 10 Dhul Hijjah (with the Days of Tashreeq, 11–13 Dhul Hijjah). Also known as Eid ul-Adha, Bakrid, Bakra Eid, Feast of Sacrifice, Qurban Bayramı, Hari Raya Haji.
When is Eid al-Adha 2027?
Eid al-Adha 1448 AH is expected on Sunday, 16 May 2027 (10 Dhul Hijjah 1448). Like every Islamic day, it begins at sunset the evening before. That is in 217 days (about 31 weeks).
Based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. In countries that begin months with local moon sighting, the date may be one day later. Please confirm with your local mosque.
Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated on 10 Dhul Hijjah, the day after the Day of Arafah, while pilgrims complete the rites of Hajj. It is the greater of the two Eids and is followed by the three Days of Tashreeq (11–13 Dhul Hijjah).
The festival remembers Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah, and Allah's ransoming of the son with a great sacrifice (Quran 37:107). Muslims who can afford it offer an animal sacrifice, called udhiyah or Qurbani, and share the meat with family, neighbours and people in need.

In the Quran
Their flesh and their food reach not Allah, but the devotion from you reacheth Him. Thus have We made them subject unto you that ye may magnify Allah that He hath guided you. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the good.
فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنْحَرْ ﴿٢﴾
So pray unto thy Lord, and sacrifice.
وَفَدَيْنَٰهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍۢ ﴿١٠٧﴾
Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim.
The meaning of the sacrifice
The Quran makes clear that what matters is the intention behind the sacrifice: "Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you" (Quran 22:37). The Prophet ﷺ himself sacrificed two horned rams on Eid al-Adha (Sahih Muslim 1966).
Most scholars consider the udhiyah a confirmed sunnah for those who can afford it, while the Hanafi school considers it obligatory (wajib) for those who meet its conditions. The sacrifice is made after the Eid prayer, on the day of Eid or the following days: until the 12th of Dhul Hijjah according to many scholars, or until the 13th according to others. The meat is commonly divided into thirds: for the household, for relatives and friends, and for the poor.
The Days of Tashreeq
The three days after Eid al-Adha, 11, 12 and 13 Dhul Hijjah, are the Days of Tashreeq. The Prophet ﷺ described them as days of eating, drinking and remembrance of Allah (Sahih Muslim 1141), so fasting on them is not allowed, except for a pilgrim who cannot find a sacrificial animal, as many scholars explain from Quran 2:196.
Recommended practices

- Go to the prayer by one route and return by another. (Sahih al-Bukhari 986)
- Do not fast on the day of Eid. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1990; Sahih Muslim 1137)
Where scholars differ
The Hanafi school regards the sacrifice as obligatory for those who can afford it, while the majority regard it as a highly recommended sunnah. The date of Eid can also differ by a day between countries that follow local moon sighting and those following Saudi Arabia.
