When is Laylat al-Qadr 2027?

Laylat al-Qadr 1448 AH is expected on the night beginning at sunset on Friday, 5 March 2027, leading into 27 Ramadan (Saturday, 6 March 2027). The last ten nights of Ramadan, in which it should be sought, begin on the evening of Saturday, 27 February 2027. That is in 145 days (about 20 weeks).

Based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. In countries that begin months with local moon sighting, the date may be one day later. Please confirm with your local mosque.

Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree (also translated Night of Power), is the night in which the Quran was first sent down. The Quran says it is better than a thousand months, and a whole surah, Surah al-Qadr (chapter 97), is devoted to it.

Its exact date was not fixed for Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ told his companions to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan, that is, the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th nights. Many Muslims give special attention to the 27th night, but worshipping throughout the last ten nights is the way to be sure of reaching it.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Where the start of a month depends on local moon sighting, the actual date in your country may be one day later (occasionally one day earlier). Islamic days begin at sunset, so each observance starts on the evening before its Gregorian date.

In the Quran

Lo! We revealed it on the Night of Predestination. Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is! The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all decrees. (The night is) Peace until the rising of the dawn.
Quran 97:1–5 (Surah Al-Qadr). Translation: Pickthall.

إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةٍۢ مُّبَٰرَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ ﴿٣﴾

Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning -
Quran 44:3 (Surah Ad-Dukhaan). Translation: Pickthall.

Which night is Laylat al-Qadr?

The Prophet ﷺ said: seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten of Ramadan (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017; Sahih Muslim 1169). Some companions, such as Ubayy ibn Ka'b, held that it is the 27th night (Sahih Muslim 762), and this is why the 27th is widely observed. Other scholars say it can move from year to year within the last ten nights.

Remember that Islamic nights come before their days: the 27th night begins at sunset at the end of the 26th day of Ramadan. The table above shows the Gregorian evening on which each 27th night begins, and the evening the last ten nights start.

Its virtue

Surah al-Qadr describes the night as better than a thousand months, a night in which the angels and the Spirit (Jibril) descend by their Lord's permission, and which is peace until the break of dawn (Quran 97:1–5). The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and hoping for reward will have their previous sins forgiven (Sahih al-Bukhari 1901).

Frequently asked questions

Is Laylat al-Qadr always on the 27th night?

What should I do on Laylat al-Qadr?

Pray at night, recite the Quran, make dhikr and dua, give charity and ask Allah for forgiveness. The dua "Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul-afwa fafu anni" was taught by the Prophet for this night.

Can women who are not praying still benefit from Laylat al-Qadr?

Yes. Dhikr, dua, seeking forgiveness, listening to the Quran and charity are open to everyone, including women who are not praying because of menstruation.
