Islamic New Year 2027: 1 Muharram 1449 AH
رَأْس السَّنَة الهِجْرِيَّة · 1 Muharram. Also known as Hijri New Year, 1 Muharram, Ras al-Sanah al-Hijriyah.
When is Islamic New Year 2027?
Islamic New Year 1449 AH is expected on Sunday, 6 June 2027 (1 Muharram 1449). Like every Islamic day, it begins at sunset the evening before. That is in 238 days (about 34 weeks).
Based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. In countries that begin months with local moon sighting, the date may be one day later. Please confirm with your local mosque.
The Islamic New Year begins on 1 Muharram, the first day of the first month of the Hijri calendar. The Hijri calendar counts its years from the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.
There is no special ritual prescribed for the new year itself, so for many Muslims it is a quiet day of reflection. Muharram as a whole, however, is a sacred month and an excellent time for voluntary fasting.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Islamic days begin at sunset, so each observance starts on the evening before its Gregorian date.
In the Quran
Lo! the number of the months with Allah is twelve months by Allah's ordinance in the day that He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred: that is the right religion. So wrong not yourselves in them. And wage war on all of the idolaters as they are waging war on all of you. And know that Allah is with those who keep their duty (unto Him).
How the Hijri calendar began
During the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, the companions agreed to date years from the Prophet's arrival in Madinah rather than from his birth, his prophethood or his death. The companion Sahl ibn Sa'd reported that they counted the calendar from his arrival in Madinah (Sahih al-Bukhari 3934). Muharram was chosen as the first month of the year.
The year 1 AH (anno Hegirae) began in July 622 CE. Because 33 Hijri years are roughly 32 solar years, the Hijri year number grows slightly faster than the Gregorian one.
Muharram, a sacred month
Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran (Quran 9:36); the Prophet ﷺ named them as Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab (Sahih al-Bukhari 3197; Sahih Muslim 1679). He called Muharram "the month of Allah" and said the best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in Muharram (Sahih Muslim 1163). Its tenth day is Ashura.
Recommended practices
- Fast voluntarily during Muharram. (Sahih Muslim 1163)
- Respect the sanctity of the sacred months by avoiding wrongdoing. (Quran 9:36)
- Fast the Day of Ashura (10 Muharram), ideally with the 9th. (Sahih Muslim 1162; Sahih Muslim 1134)
Where scholars differ
There is no authentic text prescribing a special prayer or dua for the new year. Some Muslims exchange new-year greetings as a cultural custom, and scholars differ on whether this is encouraged or simply permissible.
