When is First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah 2027?

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah 1448 AH are expected to begin on Friday, 7 May 2027. The Day of Arafah is expected on Saturday, 15 May 2027 and Eid al-Adha on Sunday, 16 May 2027. That is in 208 days (about 29 weeks).

Based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. In countries that begin months with local moon sighting, the date may be one day later. Please confirm with your local mosque.

Dhul Hijjah is the twelfth and last month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four sacred months. Its first ten days are the most virtuous days of the year: the Prophet ﷺ said no good deeds are dearer to Allah than those done in these days.

These days contain the Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah, the Day of Arafah on the 9th and Eid al-Adha on the 10th. Muslims who are not on Hajj join in through fasting, remembrance of Allah (dhikr), charity and the Eid sacrifice.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Where the start of a month depends on local moon sighting, the actual date in your country may be one day later (occasionally one day earlier). Islamic days begin at sunset, so each observance starts on the evening before its Gregorian date.

In the Quran

وَٱلْفَجْرِ ﴿١﴾ وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍۢ ﴿٢﴾

By the Dawn And ten nights,
Quran 89:1–2 (Surah Al-Fajr). Translation: Pickthall.

And proclaim unto mankind the pilgrimage. They will come unto thee on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every deep ravine, That they may witness things that are of benefit to them, and mention the name of Allah on appointed days over the beast of cattle that He hath bestowed upon them. Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor unfortunate.
Quran 22:27–28 (Surah Al-Hajj). Translation: Pickthall.

Virtue of the first ten days

The Prophet ﷺ said that there are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days. The companions asked, not even jihad? He said: not even jihad, except a man who went out risking himself and his wealth and came back with nothing (Sunan Abi Dawud 2438; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 757; a similar wording is in Sahih al-Bukhari 969). Many commentators understand the oath "by the ten nights" (Quran 89:2) as referring to these days, and the "known days" in which Allah's name is mentioned (Quran 22:28) are also linked to them.

Hajj overview

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime for every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able (Quran 3:97). It takes place in and around Makkah from the 8th to the 13th of Dhul Hijjah. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever performs Hajj without obscene speech or wrongdoing returns as free of sin as the day their mother bore them (Sahih al-Bukhari 1521), and that an accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari 1773; Sahih Muslim 1349).

  • 8 Dhul Hijjah (Day of Tarwiyah): pilgrims in ihram go to Mina and spend the day and night there.
  • 9 Dhul Hijjah (Day of Arafah): pilgrims stand at Arafah from midday until sunset, then move to Muzdalifah for the night.
  • 10 Dhul Hijjah (Day of Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha): stoning of the large pillar (Jamrat al-Aqabah), the sacrifice, shaving or trimming the hair, and Tawaf al-Ifadah around the Kaaba.
  • 11–13 Dhul Hijjah (Days of Tashreeq): pilgrims stay in Mina and stone the three pillars each day; they may leave after the 12th or stay for the 13th (Quran 2:203), then perform the farewell tawaf before leaving Makkah.

If you plan to offer a sacrifice (Qurbani)

The Prophet ﷺ said that when the ten days begin, anyone who intends to offer a sacrifice should not cut their hair or nails until they have sacrificed (Sahih Muslim 1977). Scholars differ on whether this is obligatory or strongly recommended. It applies to the person offering the sacrifice, not to every member of the household.

Recommended practices

  • Increase good deeds of every kind: prayer, charity, Quran, kindness to family. (Sunan Abi Dawud 2438; Sahih al-Bukhari 969)
  • Remember Allah often, especially with takbir (Allahu akbar), tahlil and tahmid. (Quran 22:28)
  • Fast the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah) if you are not on Hajj. (Sahih Muslim 1162)
  • If you will offer a sacrifice, leave your hair and nails uncut from 1 Dhul Hijjah until it is done. (Sahih Muslim 1977)
  • Perform Hajj if it has become obligatory on you. (Quran 3:97; Quran 22:27)

Where scholars differ

Scholars differ on whether fasting all of the first nine days is a confirmed sunnah; many recommend it as part of increasing good deeds, while others limit the emphasis to the Day of Arafah. The start of Dhul Hijjah in your country may differ by a day from the Umm al-Qura dates shown here; for Hajj itself the Saudi announcement applies.

Frequently asked questions

When do the 10 days of Dhul Hijjah start?

They start at sunset on the last day of Dhul Qadah, so the first day of Dhul Hijjah is the following day. The table on this page shows 1 Dhul Hijjah for each year from 2025 to 2030.

Are the days of Dhul Hijjah better than the last ten nights of Ramadan?

Many scholars say the days of the first ten of Dhul Hijjah are the best days of the year, while the last ten nights of Ramadan are the best nights, because they contain Laylat al-Qadr.

Can I cut my hair in Dhul Hijjah if I am not giving Qurbani?

Yes. The instruction to leave hair and nails uncut applies to the person who intends to offer a sacrifice.

When is Hajj?

The main rites of Hajj take place from 8 to 13 Dhul Hijjah, with the Day of Arafah on the 9th.
