When is Day of Arafah 2027?

Day of Arafah 1448 AH is expected on Saturday, 15 May 2027 (9 Dhul Hijjah 1448). Like every Islamic day, it begins at sunset the evening before. That is in 216 days (about 30 weeks).

Based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. In countries that begin months with local moon sighting, the date may be one day later. Please confirm with your local mosque.

The Day of Arafah falls on 9 Dhul Hijjah, the day before Eid al-Adha. On this day pilgrims gather on the plain of Arafah, about 20 km southeast of Makkah, and spend the afternoon in prayer and supplication. Standing at Arafah is the central rite of Hajj: the Prophet ﷺ said "Hajj is Arafah" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 889; Sunan Abi Dawud 1949).

Muslims around the world who are not on Hajj are encouraged to fast this day. The Prophet ﷺ said fasting it is hoped to expiate the sins of the previous year and the coming year (Sahih Muslim 1162).

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Where the start of a month depends on local moon sighting, the actual date in your country may be one day later (occasionally one day earlier). Islamic days begin at sunset, so each observance starts on the evening before its Gregorian date.

In the Quran

Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swineflesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the death-stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto idols. And (forbidden is it) that ye swear by the divining arrows. This is an abomination. This day are those who disbelieve in despair of (ever harming) your religion; so fear them not, fear Me! This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favour unto you, and have chosen for you as religion al-Islam. Whoso is forced by hunger, not by will, to sin: (for him) lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Quran 5:3 (Surah Al-Maaida). Translation: Pickthall.

Why the Day of Arafah is special

The verse "This day I have perfected for you your religion" (Quran 5:3) was revealed on the Day of Arafah during the Prophet's farewell pilgrimage, as Umar ibn al-Khattab confirmed (Sahih al-Bukhari 45; Sahih Muslim 3017). The Prophet ﷺ also said there is no day on which Allah frees more servants from the Fire than the Day of Arafah (Sahih Muslim 1348).

Fasting on Arafah if you are not on Hajj

Fasting the Day of Arafah is a sunnah for those who are not performing Hajj. Pilgrims standing at Arafah are not encouraged to fast: the Prophet ﷺ himself was seen not fasting there when a cup of milk was sent to him and he drank it in front of the people (Sahih al-Bukhari 1988; Sahih Muslim 1123).

When the date of Arafah in your country differs from the date in Saudi Arabia, scholars differ on whether to fast according to the day pilgrims are at Arafah or according to the local 9 Dhul Hijjah. Follow the guidance of your local scholars.

Recommended practices

  • Fast the day if you are not on Hajj. (Sahih Muslim 1162)
  • Make plenty of dua; the best supplication is the one made on the Day of Arafah. (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3585)

Dua

Best words said on the Day of Arafah

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things competent.
